On February 25, U.S. President Donald Trump introduced a proposal to replace the existing foreign investor visa program with a new immigration initiative known as the ‘$5 Million Golden Visa.’
President Trump Prioritizes Wealthy Immigrants
Speaking at the White House on February 25, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his administration’s intention to attract a specific category of immigrants—those with significant financial resources.
The proposed plan would offer foreign nationals a ‘Golden Visa,’ granting them legal permanent residency in the United States in exchange for an investment of approximately $5 million. According to a report by Politico, this program would serve as a replacement for the controversial EB-5 investor visa program, which has been the subject of criticism for years.
“We will be selling the Golden Visa,” President Trump stated. “We are pricing it at around $5 million. This visa will offer all the benefits of a Green Card while also providing a clear pathway to U.S. citizenship. Wealthy individuals from around the world will be eager to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The President further mentioned that additional details regarding the initiative would be disclosed within the next two weeks.
Replacing the EB-5 Investor Visa Program
The EB-5 visa program has historically provided foreign investors with a Green Card in return for investing in U.S. businesses. Established by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in 1990, the program was intended to “stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors.”
However, the program has faced widespread scrutiny due to concerns over fraudulent practices and loopholes that have allowed investors to obtain Green Cards at relatively low costs.
“The EB-5 program has been riddled with inefficiencies and fraud—it has essentially become a cheap way to obtain a Green Card,” said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in an interview with CNBC News. “As the President has indicated, we are eliminating the EB-5 program and replacing it with the Golden Visa initiative.”
